Ashley Watzig
Study Abroad Coordinator
Ashley was born and raised in a small, rural town in the state of Wisconsin in the United States. Growing up, she had very little experience with travel, intercultural exchange, or languages, but this changed when she began her bachelor’s degree at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP). During this time, she was able to intern with the English as a Second Language (ESL) program at UWSP, where she worked with international students who were studying English for entrance to the university and local community members who wanted to improve their English for daily use.
Ashley also pursued an opportunity to study abroad in Marburg, Germany, where she studied the German language for one semester at the Philipps-Universität Marburg. Her classmates were not only Americans studying abroad, but also, like the ESL students she had worked with at UWSP, were individuals from all over the world studying German in order to enroll at the university. Through these formative experiences, Ashley was convinced of the importance of international education and language learning. In the end, Ashley triple-majored in German, History, and International Studies and minored in Teaching English as a Second Language.
Ashley taught German for a few years after graduating, but then decided to pursue a Master of Science in Education (concentration in Student Affairs Administration) at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. To fulfill her graduateship requirements, she gained valuable experience working in her alma mater’s Office of International Education, where she supported outgoing study abroad students and incoming international students. Ashley’s experience in this capacity, along with her background in teaching and her time abroad, serve her well in her role at CEPA.
In her spare time, Ashley enjoys reading, crafting (particularly embroidery and crochet), and baking all sorts of cakes, pastries, and cookies. She also loves being out in nature, whether it be through walking, hiking, running, or camping. Ashley is fluent in English and has a working proficiency in German.
