ESC Heidelberg Summer STEM Program Launching in 2027

Herzlich Willkommen in Heidelberg!

We are excited to share the launch of our new ESC Heidelberg Summer STEM Program, giving students the opportunity to study in one of Europe’s leading university cities while combining academic learning with cultural exploration and professional discovery. Heidelberg has been an important part of CEPA’s story since 2011, when we opened our first program in the city.

Program Details

We are opening a 6 1/2-week program in Summer 2027 (mid-May to early-July) and has been intentionally designed to be an academically rigorous and affordable experience, with meaningful engagement in local and European culture.

Highlights include:

  • $7,995 program fee, with Affiliate Grants and scholarship opportunities available through the CEPA Foundation
  • Up to 7 U.S. credits, featuring core STEM courses plus an elective focused on the history, culture and science of beer brewing in Germany
  • Modern student housing, just a 10-minute walk from the CEPA ESC, with all participants living in the same residence.
  • An unlimited public transportation and regional train rail pass for Germany
  • 3 included excursions – including one to France – that combine cultural experiences with STEM-focused visits
  • A co-curricular program highlighting career pathways and Germany’s automobile industry

CEPA is Joining the Terra Education Family


As we begin the new year, the entire CEPA team wishes partners and friends a happy and healthy 2026. May all our programs be successful and our students be transformed by their experience abroad!

This year will be a particularly exciting one for CEPA.

As of January 1st, CEPA has officially joined Terra Education, a San Diego-based global organization that operates a diverse portfolio of educational programs worldwide. It serves as the parent company of several independent organizations that develop and run immersive academic and travel programs, intentionally designed for university-level students, teens, youth, families, and active older adults.

After seeing several paintings from Claude Monet’s series of the Rouen Cathedral while in Paris, I was excited to see the cathedral’s intricate architecture as we traveled to Rouen. However, I was not expecting to have the chance to see a light show within the inside of the cathedral that highlighted its history and beauty in such a unique and immersive way!

Studying in the capital of Austria, sometimes life felt fast-paced. Even though the journey to Hallstatt was lengthy, the beautiful town of Hallstatt was more than just picturesque. It was a place that was filled with history in such a quiet town and really captured the variety that Austria has to offer, from the mountains of Hallstatt to the bustling city of Vienna.

As I hiked along the trail by the Konigssee with my fellow students, we came to a lookout point to rest, and I was absolutely stunned by the view that opened up before us. The intricate mosaics lining the ceilings and walls were so stunning that I nearly forgot to buy the online tickets before walking up to the entrance of the baths. Later, as I sat admiring the artwork while soaking in the baths, I could not help but have so much gratitude for the opportunities my Europe trip had given me.

Today, the bridge arching proudly over the Neretva River is utilized by tourists and residents to walk the bustling streets of Mostar. Three decades ago, the bridge lay in ruins at the bottom of the river from the Bosnian War. The strength of the city is palpable when seeing and walking across this bridge, knowing that in just twenty years, its people were able to rebuild themselves despite the destruction.

One of the main reasons so many people visit France is to see the stunning and breathtaking architectural accomplishments found in the country's monuments. From the Eiffel Tower to ancient chapels, to castles and palaces, to memorials and sacred tombs, the people of early and present-day France have clearly held high expectations for others and themselves. I wish to be like them.

One of the most shocking aspects of my time abroad is the transportation systems. For example, each place I visited abroad was extremely walkable, and I would walk an average of 15,000 steps a day which is almost triple what I do at home. This picture captures walking the streets of Paris, which is one of my favorite memories from trip even if it seems minuscule.

My German STEM experience taught me to value precision, innovation, and diversity—principles that also resonate deeply within the LGBT culture, where uniqueness and creativity thrive. As I navigated scientific challenges in this country, I found community and pride in queer spaces that celebrated authenticity and inclusion. This dual journey strengthened my identity, showing me that being analytical and being proudly queer are not only compatible but beautifully complementary.

The parliament building in Berlin, formerly the Reichstag, is now being referred to as the Bundestag in order to steer away from civil division and more towards a truly unified Germany. The inscription above the entrance, “Dem Deutschen Volke,” means “To the German People”— very indicative of its goal of inclusivity, mirrored by the diversity of our study abroad group featured in the picture.

This picture captures the moment where we walked back down from the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes to our hotel after the sunsets. That day was filled with breathtaking activities as we rode up to the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in the famous "Bubbles" (cable car cabins), did a small picnic/lecture, and took in a magnificent view of the city of Grenoble with the sun setting behind the surrounding Alps.

The beauty of the Alps inspired me to take this photo with my friend; it felt like we were in a postcard. The quiet appreciation of being alone that Norway can provide, whether it is in the busy city center of Oslo or this quiet forest on Mount Floy led me to want to capture this moment. It felt monumental to me, being able to be alone yet not feel lonely, and take those steps forward onto this hike by myself; it wasn’t an easy hike, but one that became 25 kilometers with just my mind to push me forward. This moment and hike felt symbolic to my own journey, where sometimes I do feel alone but now I find comfort in that, rather than loneliness, encouraging me to take one step forward even when it becomes hard.

My program took us to Berlin where we studied capitalism versus communism during the cold war and what stuck out to me about the west side as it appears very modern because of the city's rebuild. On the east side however, the buildings are gothic and have the old town feel. In Prague, where I also got to visit, is where this photo is taken and I took it because it was built as an architectural jewel and withholds the history of the land.

Castles are pretty cool and my childhood self (who has always wanted to be a princess and live in a castle) would be excited to step foot into one. Copenhagen is known to be one of the most sustainable cities in the world. The IKEA rooftop garden near the hotel we were staying at is just one example of the countless natural public spaces in Copenhagen. My friends and I took a leisurely stroll in what seemed like a garden in the sky with the cool “cactus” buildings in the background.

This bridge in the middle of Geneva was adorned with queer, Swiss, and Genevian flags which showed the city's pride and claim to all these groups. I loved seeing that and the openness of expression in Geneva and that is something I noticed in other cities across the countries we visited as well.

My group and I were in Paris on the night their team won the world championship for the first time. We had NO idea it was happening— but the city was so alive that night. My inspiration: Monaco had long lived in my imagination — partly for the thrill of Formula 1, but even more for its breathtaking beauty that feels almost otherworldly. I was drawn to the contrast: the sleek luxury set against intricate, old-world architecture; the vibrant hues of the Riviera sky melting into the sea. Experiencing it in person was surreal — like stepping into a painting. This photo captures just a glimpse of that feeling — a place where elegance meets edge, and every view feels one of a kind.

There’s a Danish term used to conceptualize tracks and traces– either physical such as by an animal or human, or something abstract like an emotion. The word is “Spor”. Now that I know, I see them everywhere in the city, subtly denoting the passage of time and history, old and new. Do you see it here?

When I walked by this tombstone I was stunned at this masterpiece. I didn’t know a tombstone could look so beautiful. It was carved in silence, this tombstone doesn’t mourn- it tells. Of a life once lived, a love once lost.

Vienna’s architecture represents to me the history and past of the city. My study abroad group went to Vienna to learn about all their advancements and their gender inclusivity. It was my first time in Europe, but the moment I stepped into Berlin’s Tiergarten, I felt like I had been there before—in a childhood dream. I grew up watching princess movies on VHS tapes, believing in castles and happily ever afters. That day, sunlight spilled through the trees like golden glitter, dancing across my skin and the quiet pond behind me. I wore a floral dress, floated in a rowboat, and for a fleeting moment, I wasn’t just a young woman exploring a new city—I was five years old again. And the little girl in me finally got her fairytale.

My whole stay in Zurich I was astounded by the city's beauty. After speaking with some locals, they told my friends and I to take a day trip to Oschinen Lake. I was filled with awe and amazement at the beauty of the glacier lake with the mountain backdrop, printing a smile on my face I couldn't wipe off.

Strongest Narrative in a Series of Photos

Congratulations to Adedapo Hakeem from Arizona State University for this well-deserved recognition!

Each photograph captures a moment and conveys powerful emotions, weaving an inspiring narrative through the imagery and descriptions.


Adedapo Hakeem “Transition” Schaffhausen, Switzerland

At its core, this image is a visual representation of the transition travelers undergo. A journey from darkness to light, the tunnel symbolizes hope, emergence, and breakthrough. Or in my case, confinement and uncertainty toward clarity and freedom.

This picture serves as an environmental commentary. The exposed rock and narrowed ice channels tell a story of glacial retreat. It is a documentation of what was lost due to climate change. What once was ice, is now only gravel and time remain.

This photo frames the grand church of Liebfrauenmünster and its two towers commanding the skyline. Centuries of architecture is nestled above every home which contributes to the city’s layered history. Experiences like this deepened my sense of place and continuity across time.

This blend of nature and modern life reflects the balance of tradition and progress I experienced throughout my study abroad journey. It captures a moment of perspective regarding how my time abroad allowed me to step back and see things from a broader perspective.

This moment of peace captured in a Darmstadt residential area shows the quiet rhythms of daily life. Rhythms that I was able to explore heavily throughout my trip. The sunlight filtering through the trees reflects a sense of comfort and belonging shaped by warmth.

Throughout my time abroad, it was the perfect opportunity for introspection. These steps rise and draw the eye, and metaphorically, the mind upward, which signifies the growth that travel can bring.

Celebrating International Education Week!


The CEPA team is proud to be part of the international education community and to support students and faculty during their cultural and educational journeys in Europe.

We would like to thank all the students who participated this year, as well as the faculty, study abroad offices, and on-site coordinators who assisted us in selecting the winners.

Global Journeys: Germany in a Globalized World with Dr. Barbara Drescher, Professor of German Studies

March 5th – March 12th, 2023

How do Germans view themselves and connect with others in the 21st century? How do Germans react to their 20th century past? What role have memory and monuments played after Germany was divided and reunited? What local and global meanings might they create as 21st century Germany begins to embrace multicultural identities?

This Journeys course will investigate the role of memory, culture, and art by focusing on how monuments and museums in Berlin negotiate present and past identities. By exploring how the capital city of Berlin prioritizes events in the past for collective representation and national debate, students will reflect on the multifaceted ways of negotiating its (Nazi, Communist, Colonialist) pasts. Moreover, this course will explore how this continuing struggle over interpreting one’s history not only shapes today’s intersectional identities, but also future generations’ national, social, cultural, global identities.

 

Itinerary/Highlights:

Berlin Government Quarter (Regierungsviertel), Jewish Museum, German History Museum, Holocaust Monument, TV Tower Alexanderplatz in former East Berlin, lectures with various religious, cultural communities and activists.

Omicron Delta Kappa Induction Convocation & Lecture

Georgia College and State University’s circle, or chapter, of the national leadership honor society Omicron Delta Kappa announced the recipient of their 2023 member-honoris-causa (honorary membership).

It was awarded to the Executive Director of CEPA, Uli Leibrecht, in recognition of the leadership she provides in international education and the good she has created at Georgia College through the Intercultural Leadership program.

The annual awards celebrate individuals and organizations that have demonstrated outstanding leadership and have had a positive impact on the campus community. Previous members-honoris-causa include the Georgia state senator, two private sector CEOs, and two professors. Established in 1914 at Washington & Lee University (Virginia), ODK is the national leadership honor society. Famous members have included Franklin Roosevelt, Robert Kennedy, Walter Cronkite, Jimmy Carter, George H. W. Bush, and Cokie Roberts.
