The Norwegian Approach to Healthcare

The Scandinavian healthcare systems are well known for their great quality in service and support. Especially the system in Norway is founded on several beliefs such as free choice of provider, universal access, and decentralization. In general, healthcare services in Norway are not for free, but as soon as the individual fee of a patient exceeds roughly 200 USD, all further services will be free of charge – for the rest of the year.

DAY 1
- Overnight flight to Oslo, Norway (group flight can be booked separately)
DAY 2-3: OSLO
Stay 8 nights at a 3-star hotel in Oslo
- Arrival at Oslo Gardermoen Airport (OSL)
- Check-in at the hotel and orientation session by your CEPA On-Site Coordinator
- Guided walking tour of Oslo, during which you will see some of the city’s highlights, such as the Vigelandsparken and the Opera House
- Welcome dinner at a Norwegian restaurant
- Admission to the National Museum of Medicine, which features a permanent exhibition that explains how people’s lives have changed and improved in public health in over 150 years
- Visit a nursing home for people that can no longer live on their own. Patients get treatment in different forms, such as physiotherapy or the upkeep of haptic skills.
DAY 4: LILLEHAMMER
- Admission to the Maihaugen Open-Air Museum, showing you the life of Norwegians from the 12^th century until today. The open-air museum consists of more than 200 buildings.
- Admission to Sigrid Undset’s House to learn about her life from her childhood, the life as a housewife and mother, her Nobel Prize, and the fight against the Nazis during WWII

DAY 5-10: OSLO
- Free day to further explore the city
- Visit a community hospital in Oslo. Most of the hospitals are state driven but have the right to decide what to spend their annual budget on together with the community.
- Admission to the Nobel Peace Center, which is home to the annual Nobel Peace Award. One of the exhibitions features the Peace Price Laureates, filled with information, photos, and videos about each of their lives and work.
- Group dinner at a Norwegian restaurant
- Visit a health insurance company that supports citizens in question regarding health services as well as different insurance models
- Guided tour of the Opera House of Oslo, during which you will get an insight behind the scenes, the workshop, as well as the paint studio. Additionally, you will learn about the exceptional architecture and stage technology of Oslo’s most famous building.
- Visit a Frisklivssentral, which can be described as a consulting center. People who are registered citizens of Norway can get advice on how to lose weight, get emotional support by a therapist, or start to quit smoking.
- Visit the Akershus Fortress. It is a great place to discover the history of the city as well as to enjoy the view over the skyline of Oslo. The surrounding park is known as the “green lungs” of Oslo and a famous recreational spot for citizens.
- Admission to the Viking Ship Museum, which is home to the world’s best-preserved Viking ships and finds from the Viking tombs of the Oslo Fjord. The museum also features different textiles and household utensils and tells the story of the world-famous people from the early middle ages.
- Free afternoon to discover the capital of Norway further at your own pace
- Farewell dinner at a Norwegian restaurant
- Departure from Oslo Gardermoen Airport (OSL)

This course provides an opportunity for students to gain an appreciation for different lifestyle choices and the impact those choices have on health. Facilitated discussions focusing on the scientific method, epidemiology research, and lifestyle contributors to the prevention or development of chronic diseases will occur throughout the course.

Students will gain an international perspective through a rich study abroad program with valuable experiences that students can draw from as they progress through their academic and professional path.

DAY 1
- Overnight flight to Athens, Greece (group flight can be booked separately)
DAY 2-4: ATHENS
Stay 5 nights at a 3-star hotel in Athens
- Arrival at Athens International Airport (ATH)
- Check-in at the hotel and orientation session by your CEPA On-Site Coordinator
- Welcome dinner at a Greek restaurant
- Guided tour of the Acropolis, the greatest and finest sanctuary of ancient Athens, dedicated primarily to its patron, the goddess Athena
- Visit a winery to learn about the process of winemaking (tasting included)
- Visit the Holistic Health Center to learn about the center in general and their methods of treating each person as a whole
- Cooking class in the evening, during which you will prepare a traditional Greek dish
DAY 5: AEGINA
- Round-trip ferry tickets to and from Aegina
- Visit the Saronic dialysis center, which provides the highest standard of therapeutic services for renal patients, which meet modern medical regulations
- Free afternoon on Aegina

DAY 6: ATHENS
- Gourmet walking tour of Athens, during which you will visit various specialty food shops, colorful and alluring delicatessens, aromatic and tempting bakeries and sweet shops, restaurants, dairies, spice, grocery, and pie shops
- Free afternoon in Athens for your own explorations
DAY 7-8: HERAKLION
Stay 5 nights at a 3-star hotel in Heraklion
- Optional: Group flight from Athens to Heraklion
- Check-in at the hotel and orientation session by your CEPA On-Site Coordinator
- Free afternoon in Heraklion
- Group dinner at a Greek restaurant
- Guided tour of the Archaeological Site of Knossos, one of the most important palaces of Minoan civilization which, according to the tradition, was the seat of the legendary king Minos

DAY 9-10: CRETE
- Visit an apiary to learn more about Cretan apiary and bee farming. Their hives are spread across the island and give them a wide range of varietal honey featuring the depth and diversity of Cretan wild flora.
- Visit a winery, where you will be introduced to the Cretan wine heritage and you will have the possibility to taste some Cretan wines as well as a selection of Cretan cheeses and other delicacies
- Guided tour of the old central market (1866 street) and the fish market
- Visit an olive oil producer to learn more about olive oil production, which begins when the olives that freshly arrive at the mill are carefully poured into a stainless-steel container that delivers them into an endless screw
DAY 11: HERAKLION
- Free day in Heraklion
DAY 12-13: ATHENS
Stay 1 night at a 3-star hotel in Athens
- Optional: Group flight from Heraklion to Athens
- Check-in at the hotel
- Farewell dinner at a Greek restaurant
- Departure from Athens International Airport (ATH)

It is becoming increasingly important for healthcare students to gain a global perspective and expand their cultural understanding.

This program features an itinerary full of visits to reputable hospitals, companies operating in the healthcare sector in Germany as well as Swiss institutions like the World Health Organization or UNAIDS in Geneva. Students will be prepared to make a difference in the world by understanding their own personal global impact.

DAY 1
- Overnight flight to Frankfurt, Germany (group flight can be booked separately)
DAY 2-3: STRASBOURG
Stay 7 nights at the European Study Center Strasbourg (Château de Pourtalès)
- Arrival at Frankfurt International Airport (FRA)
- Check-in at the Château and orientation session by your CEPA On-Site Coordinator
- Guided walking tour of Strasbourg to discover the “Capital of Europe” and learn about its history; see among others the Strasbourg Cathedral and Maison Kammerzell
- Welcome dinner at an Alsatian restaurant
- Visit a hospital in Strasbourg, including a presentation on the French healthcare system, e.g. Saint Vincent, to understand the day-to-day tasks of nurses and doctors in France
- Admission to the Albert Schweitzer Museum, who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1953 for his philosophy “Reverence for Life” and founded the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Gabon, Africa
DAY 4: FREIBURG - BAD KROTZINGEN
- Visit the University Hospital of Freiburg Center of Nursing Education to learn about the hospital and its organization as well as the education of nurses in Germany during a discussion with instructors and a tour of the hospital
- Visit a spa town in the Black Forest, such as Bad Krozingen, to meet with a representative of the tourist office or wellness clinic to better understand the concept of “taking a cure” in Germany

DAY 5: OFFENBURG
- Visit a German health insurance company, e.g. the AOK in Offenburg, to understand the German concept of being covered by a basic health insurance plan provided by statute
- Visit the European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines and Healthcare (EDQM), a leading organization that protects public health by enabling the development, supporting the implementation, and monitoring the application of quality standards for safe medicines and their safe use
DAY 6: HEIDELBERG
- Visit the residential home “St. Thomas e.V.”, a special place offering the patients the chance to live outside a psychiatric hospital despite their handicap
- Guided tour of the German Pharmacy Museum, which is located inside the Heidelberg Castle, and holds a collection of over 20,000 objects representing the rich history of medical sciences

DAY 7-8: STRASBOURG
- Free day to explore Strasbourg’s sites at your own pace
- Bus tour along the famous “Route du Vin”, including a guided tour of the Castle Haut Koenigsbourg and a visit to an Alsatian winery to learn about the production of wines and more (tasting included)
DAY 9-12: GENEVA
Stay 3 nights at a 3-star hotel in Geneva
- Check-in at the hotel and orientation session by your CEPA On-Site Coordinator
- Visit the UNAIDS Headquarters, the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS that leads and inspires the world in achieving universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care, and support
- Visit the World Health Organization, the directing and coordinating authority for health within the United Nations system, for a presentation on “Prevention in the Healthcare Sector”
- Guided tour of the Red Crescent Museum, situated at the birthplace of the International Red Cross, to discover the history of the world’s first humanitarian organization
- Visit the International Council of Nurses, the world’s first and widest-reaching international organization for health professionals
- Free afternoon to explore Geneva on your own
- Farewell dinner at a Swiss restaurant
- Departure from Geneva Airport (GVA)

This course provides the opportunity for students to gain an appreciation for the different lifestyle choices and the impact they have on health. Robust discussions exploring the scientific study of health and wellness will focus on epidemiology research, social factors, genetics, and lifestyle choices, and their impact on the prevention or development of chronic conditions.
Students will receive a cross-cultural and historical perspective of various health remedies and practices. Experiences and lessons in this study abroad program will serve to deepen students’ understanding of key health topics as they move forward in their academic and professional fields.

DAY 1
