This study abroad opportunity will introduce students to the importance of key European cities significant to the field of psychology. The history of psychology will be presented to students through site visits, guest speakers, museum visits, and discussions.

By exposing students to a variety of psychological theories outside the regular classroom, the program will allow them to examine and compare what they have already learned.

The program ends in Vienna, the birthplace of the psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud and numerous other legendary psychologists.

  • DAY 1

    • Overnight flight to Zurich, Switzerland (group flight can be booked separately)

  • DAY 2: ZURICH

    Stay 1 night at a 3-star hotel in Zurich

    • Arrival at Zurich Kloten Airport (ZRH)
    • Check-in at the hotel and orientation session by your CEPA On-Site Coordinator
    • Guided walking tour of Zurich to come face to face with Zurich’s past and present through a selection of buildings, stories, and anecdotes
    • Welcome dinner at a Swiss restaurant

  • DAY 3: MANNHEIM- HEIDELBERG

    Stay 3 nights at a 3-star hotel in Heidelberg

    • Visit the Carl Jung Institute, which was led by Jung (founder of Analytical Psychology) until 1961, to learn about the institute and the Jungian psychology
    • Train tickets from Zurich to Mannheim
    • Check-in at the hotel and orientation session by your CEPA On-Site Coordinator

  • DAY 4-5: HEIDELBERG

    • Guided walking tour of Heidelberg, focusing on Hermann von Helmholtz (a German physician and physicist) and his time in Heidelberg
    • Admission to the Heidelberg Castle to explore the castle grounds, including the German Pharmacy Museum
    • Free day to further explore the city

  • DAY 6: WURZBURG

    Stay 1 night at a 3-star hotel in Würzburg

    • Check-in at the hotel and orientation session by your CEPA On-Site Coordinator
    • Visit the Psychology Department at the University of Würzburg for a presentation on the department and its current research projects
    • Visit the Adolf-Wuerth Center of the History of Psychology, where more than 6,500 objects are displayed, such as historical literature, historical apparatuses and instruments, as well as testing materials
    • Group dinner at a German restaurant

  • DAY 7: ROTHENBURG O.D. TAUBER - NUREMBERG - VIENNA

    • Guided walking tour of Rothenburg ob der Tauber
    • Admission to the Medieval Crime Museum to see instruments of torture, items used in the execution of sentences, costly books, and documents of emperors, princes, and the nobility
    • Train tickets from Nuremberg to Vienna

    Stay 3 nights at a 3-star hotel in Vienna

    • Check-in at the hotel and orientation session by your CEPA On-Site Coordinator

  • DAY 8-10: VIENNA

    • Visit and guest lecture at the Sigmund Freud Society to learn about the organization as well as the life and work of Anna and Sigmund Freud
    • Audio-guided tour of the Sigmund Freud Museum, which shows the life and work of the founder of psychoanalysis
    • Visit the Viktor Frankl Institute, where you will learn about the work and life of the Austrian neurologist and founder of logo therapy
    • Visit the Wiener Psychoanalytische Vereinigung, which was founded by Sigmund Freud and his colleagues, and learn about the history of psychoanalysis
    • Farewell dinner at an Austrian restaurant
    • Departure from Vienna Schwechat Airport (VIE)

On almost every indicator worth measuring – from public health to educational attainment to social well-being – the Scandinavian nations seem to have it all figured out.

Students participating in this program will be invited to gather first-hand impressions of the variety of schools and kindergartens implemented in Sweden and Finland, as well as discussing recent developments with local experts.

The students’ learning outcomes will enable them to put their own education system into perspective and consider implementing new approaches in their careers as future educators.

  • DAY 1

    • Overnight flight to Helsinki, Finland (group flight can be booked separately)

  • DAY 2-5: HELSINKI

    Stay 4 nights at a 3-star hotel in Helsinki

    • Arrival at Helsinki Vantaa Airport (HEL)
    • Check-in at the hotel and orientation session by your CEPA On-Site Coordinator
    • Guided walking tour of Helsinki, during which you will see some of the city’s highlights, such as the Cathedral of Helsinki or the Senate Square
    • Welcome dinner at a Finnish restaurant
    • Visit a secondary school, such as Kulosaari Secondary School, to learn about the Finnish K-12 education system first hand. At the international school, teaching is conducted in both Finnish and English.
    • Visit the Viikki Teacher Training School of the University of Helsinki, which is one of the oldest schools of Finland. Its educational philosophy is to teach its students the skills and knowledge needed in the future.
    • Visit a Waldorf School to learn about its humanistic approach to pedagogy, which is based on the educational philosophy of the Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner
    • Admission to the Suomenlinna Museum, located on an island, to learn about the historical events surrounding the fortress and the lives of people who lived and worked there
    • Visit a kindergarten to learn about day-care in Finland, where children do not begin primary school until they are seven years old. However, from the age of eight months, all have access to free, full-day day-care and kindergarten.
    • Guided tour of Helsinki’s Design Museum, which is an internationally recognized specialist museum of Finnish design

  • DAY6-13: STOCKHOLM

    • Free day to explore Helsinki further on your own
    • Overnight ferry from Helsinki to Stockholm

    Stay 6 nights at a 2-star hotel in Stockholm

    • Check-in at the hotel and orientation session by your CEPA On-Site Coordinator
    • Guided walking tour of Stockholm’s old town, Gamla Stan, to get a first impression of your new surroundings and to see the Royal Palace, the German Church, and the Big Square
    • Free afternoon to explore the city further at your own pace
    • Visit a school offering other alternative teaching methods, such as a Montessori school. The approach was developed by Maria Montessori and is a child-centered educational approach based on scientific observation on children.
    • Visit the Department of Education at Stockholm University for a meeting with faculty members and/or students to learn about the Swedish education system
    • Visit a preschool, such as the Futuraskola International Pre-School Brun. In Sweden, children are entitled to a place in a municipal preschool or one of the independent preschools.
    • Guided tour of the Royal Palace, which is the Majesty The King’s official residence. The palace was built in baroque style by the architect Nicodemus Tessin and is formed as a Roman palace.
    • Visit a primary school, the Grundskola. In the Swedish compulsory school, each student takes 16 compulsory subjects which are sorted by time allocated and are taken in all three school stages.
    • Free afternoon to explore the capital of Sweden further on your own
    • Visit an upper secondary school, e.g. Östra Reals Gymnasium. As part of a student-linked funding system, children and their parents can select the school they prefer.
    • Admission to the Nobel Museum, a museum devoted to circulating information on the Nobel Prize. The Nobel Prize Museum showcases information about the prizewinners as well as on Alfred Nobel.
    • Free day to explore Stockholm
    • Farewell dinner at a Swedish restaurant
    • Departure from Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN)

This course will enable students to examine the historical, philosophical, and leadership-oriented roots of western higher education. Students will examine the infrastructure and progressive evolution of higher education from medieval universities, to civic-oriented institutions, to open-access mass systems. In this cross-disciplinary program, students will deconstruct the context and infrastructure to discover how leadership has shaped higher education and how education has shaped today’s leaders.

  • DAY 1

    • Overnight flight to Frankfurt, Germany (group flight can be booked separately)

  • DAY 2-3: FRANKFURT

    • Orientation session by your on-site CEPA coordinator

    • Guided boat tour of the Ill river. This trip will take you past the gothic churches, historic bridges, and other cultural landmarks in Strasbourg and Petit France
    • Admission to the Musée Historique where you will learn about the unique ethnographic and cultural history of the region, including its economic legacy, and significance in the Franco-German relationship
    • Visit to the French Albert Schweitzer Museum to gain a comparative perpective of his theories in leadership and education

  • DAY 7: ALSACE - ROUTE DU VIN

    • Guided bus tour of Alsace’s famous wine route (“Route du Vin”) including lunch in an Alsacian village
    • Guided tour of Haut Königsbourg castle
    • Guided tour of the former concentration camp Struthof

  • DAY 8-13: STRASBOURG

    • Institutional visit to the European Parliament to learn about international leadership in politics and policy
    • Institutional visit to the Council of Europe to learn about its history, foundation, and current leadership in protecting human rights, promoting democracy and transparency
    • Yoga and Leadership seminar to learn about how yoga and non-traditional practices can enhance your leadership and listening skills
    • Visit to a local institution of higher education that focuses on practical training for individuals looking to enter the field of education, including teaching, events and group management, and occupational training
