This study abroad opportunity will introduce students to the importance of key European cities significant to the field of psychology. The history of psychology will be presented to students through site visits, guest speakers, museum visits, and discussions.

By exposing students to a variety of psychological theories outside the regular classroom, the program will allow them to examine and compare what they have already learned.

The program ends in Vienna, the birthplace of the psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud and numerous other legendary psychologists.

  • DAY 1

    • Overnight flight to Zurich, Switzerland (group flight can be booked separately)
  • DAY 2: ZURICH

    Stay 1 night at a 3-star hotel in Zurich

    • Arrival at Zurich Kloten Airport (ZRH)
    • Check-in at the hotel and orientation session by your CEPA On-Site Coordinator
    • Guided walking tour of Zurich to come face to face with Zurich’s past and present through a selection of buildings, stories, and anecdotes
    • Welcome dinner at a Swiss restaurant
  • DAY 3: MANNHEIM- HEIDELBERG

    Stay 3 nights at a 3-star hotel in Heidelberg

    • Visit the Carl Jung Institute, which was led by Jung (founder of Analytical Psychology) until 1961, to learn about the institute and the Jungian psychology
    • Train tickets from Zurich to Mannheim
    • Check-in at the hotel and orientation session by your CEPA On-Site Coordinator
  • DAY 4-5: HEIDELBERG

    • Guided walking tour of Heidelberg, focusing on Hermann von Helmholtz (a German physician and physicist) and his time in Heidelberg
    • Admission to the Heidelberg Castle to explore the castle grounds, including the German Pharmacy Museum
    • Free day to further explore the city
  • DAY 6: WURZBURG

    Stay 1 night at a 3-star hotel in Würzburg

    • Check-in at the hotel and orientation session by your CEPA On-Site Coordinator
    • Visit the Psychology Department at the University of Würzburg for a presentation on the department and its current research projects
    • Visit the Adolf-Wuerth Center of the History of Psychology, where more than 6,500 objects are displayed, such as historical literature, historical apparatuses and instruments, as well as testing materials
    • Group dinner at a German restaurant
  • DAY 7: ROTHENBURG O.D. TAUBER - NUREMBERG - VIENNA

    • Guided walking tour of Rothenburg ob der Tauber
    • Admission to the Medieval Crime Museum to see instruments of torture, items used in the execution of sentences, costly books, and documents of emperors, princes, and the nobility
    • Train tickets from Nuremberg to Vienna

    Stay 3 nights at a 3-star hotel in Vienna

    • Check-in at the hotel and orientation session by your CEPA On-Site Coordinator
  • DAY 8-10: VIENNA

    • Visit and guest lecture at the Sigmund Freud Society to learn about the organization as well as the life and work of Anna and Sigmund Freud
    • Audio-guided tour of the Sigmund Freud Museum, which shows the life and work of the founder of psychoanalysis
    • Visit the Viktor Frankl Institute, where you will learn about the work and life of the Austrian neurologist and founder of logo therapy
    • Visit the Wiener Psychoanalytische Vereinigung, which was founded by Sigmund Freud and his colleagues, and learn about the history of psychoanalysis
    • Farewell dinner at an Austrian restaurant
    • Departure from Vienna Schwechat Airport (VIE)
