Few things are as important as environmental sustainability in today’s world. We need to make sure we use the resources we have wisely so that our children will be able to continue to enjoy the same quality of life as we do. The Netherlands, Germany, and Denmark are world leaders when it comes to innovations in fields such as wind energy and building cities for the future by considering ecological sustainability today.

Students participating in this program will learn about these innovations first-hand from experts working towards a better tomorrow.

DAY 1
- Overnight flight to Amsterdam, The Netherlands (group flight can be booked separately)
DAY 2-3: AMSTERDAM
Stay 2 nights at a 3-star hotel in Amsterdam
- Arrival at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS)
- Check-in at the hotel and orientation session by your CEPA On-Site Coordinator
- “Sustainable Amsterdam” bike tour to get a first impression of the Dutch capital and to learn about the historical and modern innovations that make Amsterdam a healthy, liveable city. Among others, you will hear about renewable energy, circular economy, and clear air.
- Welcome dinner at a Dutch restaurant
- Canal cruise of Amsterdam’s famous “grachten” to see the city from a different perspective. In Amsterdam, there is a story to tell about every bridge and building, so your tour will include highlights such as the Westerkerk, Anne Frank House, and many more.
- Free time to explore Amsterdam further on your own

DAY 4-7: HAMBURG
Stay 3 nights at a 3-star hotel in Hamburg
- Visit De Dakdokters (rooftop doctors) to learn more about their work and mission. Since 2010, they transform roofs into places for nature development, recreation, water storage, and food- and energy production to improve urban health. Afterwards, you will see some rooftop sites and hear more about Amsterdam as a climate-resilient city during a guided walking tour.
- Train tickets from Amsterdam to Hamburg
- Check-in at the hotel and orientation session by your CEPA On-Site Coordinator
- Group dinner at a German restaurant
- Visit an energy provider, e.g. Hamburg Energie or Greenpeace Energy, to learn about the usage of ecological resources. Hamburg Energie, for example, is committed to providing their clients with green power and to producing the electricity in Hamburg and the surrounding regions to support the development of local sustainable energy.
- Visit the Solar Center Hamburg to learn about solar techniques and hear how Hamburg is using solar energy. Solar technologies are broadly characterized as either passive or active, depending on the way in which energy is captured, converted, and distributed. Active solar techniques include the use of photovoltaic panels and solar thermal collectors.
- Guided boat tour of Hamburg’s harbor to see the large harbor area with its docks, cranes, landings, and gigantic cargo ships and to learn about the environmental problems caused by the port operation. The Port of Hamburg is the largest port in Germany and the third-largest port in Europe, after Rotterdam and Antwerp.
- Guided tour of HafenCity Hamburg, during which you will learn about the sustainable aspects of the project. Currently, HafenCity is the largest development project in Europe, with the Elbe Philharmonic Hall as its figurehead.
- Train tickets from Hamburg to Copenhagen

DAY 7-10: COPENHAGEN
Stay 3 nights at a hostel in Copenhagen
- Check-in at the hostel and orientation session by your CEPA On-Site Coordinator
- Visit the Department of Municipal Development of the City of Copenhagen for a presentation on their project “Copenhagen: Carbon-neutral Capital by 2025”. Hear about their vision and the work that is done at the Technical and Environmental Administration, including their 2025 Climate Plan.
- Visit Middelgrunden, an offshore wind farm outside of Copenhagen, to learn more about the background of this project. It was initiated by the Copenhagen Environment and Energy Office after Middelgrunden had been listed as a potential site in the Danish Action Plan for Offshore Wind.
- Guided tour of the Amager Ressource Center to learn how it actively participates in the green transformation of Denmark. Among others, it takes the city’s waste and in return provides electricity, district heating, and recyclable materials to Copenhagen’s residents.
- Guided tour of Rosenborg Castle, the 400-year-old castle that was built by Christian IV, whose colorful personality left a strong mark on Danish history. During the tour, travel back in time and get a sense of both everyday life and the festive aspects of royal life in the course of 400 years.
- Free afternoon to further explore Copenhagen at your own pace
- Farewell dinner at a Danish restaurant
- Departure from Copenhagen Kastrup Airport (CPH)
