Iceland is known for its commitment to environmental change and harnesses its unique geographic and geothermal landscape to generate more than 99% of the country’s energy. On this program, students will explore Iceland’s historc and contemporary global economic, political environmental, and cultural impact. This interdisciplinary program includes visits to a variety of cultural sites and environmental sites to develop a well-rounded perspective of how Iceland’s culture grounds its dedication to developing renewable energy.

  • DAY 1

    • Flight to Reykjavik, Iceland (group flight can be booked separately)

  • DAY 2-4: REYKJAVIK

    • Orientation session by your on-site CEPA coordinator
    • Guided walking tour of Reykjavik
    • Welcome dinner at an Icelandic restaurant
    • Admission to the National Museum of Iceland, to explore the permanent exhibition “Making of a Nation.”
    • Admission to the Settlement Exhibition – Reykjavik 871± 2. The exhibition is built around ruins of a viking longhouse and deals with the settlement of Reykjavik
    • Guided tour of the Icelandic Ocean Cluster to learn about the Icelandic seafood industry and the ocean cluster

  • DAY 5-7: REYKJAVIK - HAUKADALUR VALLEY

    • Guided tour of the Golden Circle, one of Iceland’s most popular routes.  The highlights of the route include the famous geysers Geysir and Strokkur in the Haukadalur valley, and the Gullfoss waterfall, which is called the “Golden Falls” as the water falling down into a 32 meter deep crevice looking golden during a sunny day.
    • Lunch in Friðheimar and a visit to the local greenhouse
    • Admission to the Volcano House in Reykjavik, which gives a brief overview of Iceland’s geological history and volcanic systems

  • DAY 8-10: REYKJAVIK - GEOPARK

    • Audio-guided tour of the National Maritime Museum to explore its seven exhibitions which display Icelandic maritime history from the early settlements to the late 20th century
    • Guided bus tour of Reykjanes UNESCO Geopark which includes a visit to the ON Geothermal Energy Exhibition in Hellisheiði geothermal power plant, the geothermal areas Krýsuvík and Gunnuhver, dramatic coastlines and a shipwreck near the small fishing village Grindavík
    • Farewell dinner at an Icelandic restaurant
