Participants of this program will gain a deeper appreciation of how the Cold War (1945-1991) specifically changed Berlin, influenced a wider international struggle, and how a collective power helped bring down Communism.

In order to bring context to the interests and goals of the involved superpowers, students will be able to discuss the ways in which the Cold War rivalry affected Europe and the world as a whole. This will help equip them with the proficiency to evaluate the current and emerging international order.

  • DAY 1

    • Overnight flight to Berlin, Germany (group flight can be booked separately)
  • DAY 2-8: BERLIN

    Stay 7 nights at a hostel in Berlin

    • Arrival at Berlin Tegel Airport (TXL)
    • Check-in at the hostel and orientation session by your CEPA On-Site Coordinator
    • Guided walking tour of Berlin to learn how the city has developed over time
    • Welcome dinner at a German restaurant
    • Guided tour of the Berlin Wall Memorial, the central memorial site of German division
    • Guided tour of the Stasi Museum to learn about the former Ministry for State Security of the German Democratic Republic
    • Visit the Archives of the BstU (Federal Commissioner for the Records of the State Security Service)
    • Guided tour of the former Hohenschönhausen Prison, which was used by the Stasi between 1945 and 1989
    • Guided tour of the Marienfelde Refugee Center Museum
    • Admission to the DDR Museum exhibition
    • Guided tour of Teufelsberg, a hill which the Americans began to use as a listening post in the 1950s
    • Free afternoon to explore the city
    • Guided underground tour of Berlin “Under the Berlin Wall” to hear stories of the people who tunneled to freedom
    • Free afternoon to further explore the city
    • Guided tour of the Palace of Tears and its exhibition “Site of German Division” to learn about the division of Germany and the construction of the Berlin Wall
    • Admission to the German-Russian Museum
  • DAY 9-10: WARSAW

    • Train tickets from Berlin to Warsaw
    • Check-in at the hotel and orientation session by your CEPA On-Site Coordinator
    • Guided walking tour of Warsaw’s historical downtown
    • Guided tour of the Colonel Ryszard Kuklinski Intelligence Museum, which was opened in honor of one of the most high-ranking Western spies in the Soviet military system
    • Admission to the Museum of Independence
  • DAY 11: KRAKOW

    Stay 2 nights at a 3-star hotel in Krakow

    • Free morning to explore Warsaw
    • Train tickets from Warsaw to Krakow
    • Check-in at the hotel and orientation session by your CEPA On-Site Coordinator
  • DAY 12: OSWIECIM - KRAKOW

    • Guided tour of the former concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau
    • Free afternoon to explore Krakow
  • DAY 13: KRAKOW - PRAGUE

    • Guided tour of Nowa Huta to explore Lenin’s favorite district
    • Overnight train tickets from Krakow to Prague
  • DAY 14-17: PRAGUE

    Stay 3 nights at a 3-star hotel in Prague

    • Check-in at the hotel and orientation session by your CEPA On-Site Coordinator
    • Communism and nuclear bunker tour
    • Admission to the Museum of Communism to learn about daily life, politics, economics, sports, and more
    • Visit to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty for a presentation on the work and the purpose of RFE/RL during the Cold War and today
    • Free day for your own explorations of Prague
    • Farewell dinner at a Czech restaurant
    • Departure from Prague International Airport (PRG)
